What counts as a cloth bib?
A cloth bib is a fabric bib, usually cotton, that soaks up wetness around the chin and chest. It is the classic first bib for newborns and the drool and teething months, and it does need washing after use.
Cloth bibs come in a few shapes. Bandana bibs are triangles that sit under the chin, often with a cotton front and a fleece back. Rectangular snap bibs cover the chest and can double as a burp cloth. Terry bibs use a looped, towel-like cotton. Pull-on bibs slip over the head with no fastener. This guide covers all of them; for mealtime catch-all pockets see the silicone bib guide, and for arm coverage see the long-sleeve bib guide. The top 10 shows where cloth fits among the other types.
How we chose these listings
We searched Amazon's baby bib results and the brands parenting guides and Google results keep naming, and kept every cloth bib whose page loaded, was in stock and matched its title on 17 October 2026. This is research, not hands-on testing.
Each is judged on the checklist explained on How we review: fabric, layers, closure, care, pack size and age range. Where the listing text didn’t give a detail, we leave it blank and the table shows a dash. We report words such as "organic" and "certified" as the maker's claims, and we haven’t checked any against a certifier.

Muslin, terry, jersey and bamboo-rayon: how the fabrics differ
Muslin is a light, loosely woven cotton, and makers often describe it as quick to dry (we haven't measured it). Terry is looped like a towel, which makers describe as absorbent. Cotton jersey is a soft knit. Bamboo-rayon is a smooth, stretchy manufactured fiber. We haven’t measured absorbency for any of them.
- Muslin (Green Sprouts, aden + anais, Little Unicorn, Comfy Cubs, Itzy Ritzy): stacked into three to eight layers for absorbency, per the makers. Light and breathable, as the makers describe it.
- Terry (Neat Solutions, Foaincore, Nvatorfox, The Peanutshell): a looped cloth like a hand towel. Several terry listings blend cotton with polyester.
- Jersey and fleece-backed bandana bibs (Gerber, KeaBabies, Konssy, CIVARUA): a cotton or muslin front with a polyester fleece or water-resistant back, which keeps moisture off the chest but means the bib isn’t all cotton.
- Bamboo-rayon (PurComfy, Bamboo Little, KYTE BABY): the listings say rayon or viscose "from bamboo". That describes a manufactured fiber, with bamboo as the starting material.
If you want a bib that is entirely cotton, check the material line: several popular sets are cotton at the front and polyester behind.
Organic, OEKO-TEX and "CPSC approved": what the claims mean
"Organic", "GOTS-certified" and "OEKO-TEX" on a listing are the maker's statements about third-party certification labels. We have checked none of them. Whether a product really holds a certification can be confirmed with the certifier, not from the listing.
Burt's Bees Baby states GOTS-certified organic cotton, CIVARUA states OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, and KeaBabies, Green Sprouts, DOSMINE and Yoofoss use the word organic. We have recorded these as claims and we haven’t looked any product up in a certifier's database.
Yoofoss's listing says the bibs are "approved by CPSC certification". That isn’t how CPSC's system works as we read it: manufacturers and importers must test children's products at a CPSC-accepted laboratory and then certify the results themselves (CPSC on total lead content; CPSC on phthalates). We treat the phrase as the maker's wording, not as a CPSC approval.
Sizing, closures and fit
Snaps with more than one position let a bib grow with the neck, hook-and-loop adjusts continuously, and a pull-on bib has no closure at all. Whatever the style, check that the closure is intact before each use.
The listings give few measurements. aden + anais says 9 by 13 inches and Bamboo Little 9 by 13.25 inches. CIVARUA has two sets of nickel-free snaps for three sizes, DOSMINE two adjustable snaps, Green Sprouts an adjustable snap closure, and Nvatorfox hook and loop. Foaincore's pull-on bibs have no fastener to fail but have to fit over the head. CPSC's July 2026 recall of personalized bibs, where a snap could detach and create a choking hazard (recall notice), applied to one seller's handmade products and not to anything on this page, but it is a reason to check snaps regularly. CPSC's small-parts guidance describes a small part as anything that fits entirely inside a cylinder approximating a young child's fully expanded throat (CPSC small parts guidance); it doesn’t mention bibs, so we can’t say how it applies, but it is a useful test for a loose snap.
Washing and care
Most cloth bibs are machine washable, but listings differ: Nuby's muslin teething bib is hand wash cold only, and several listings didn’t state care at all. Follow the listing, and expect to wash cloth bibs often.
- Machine wash: Burt's Bees Baby, Gerber (muslin set), DOSMINE (or hand), Nvatorfox, PurComfy (cold, tumble dry low), Bamboo Little, KYTE BABY, The Peanutshell.
- Hand wash cold only: Nuby muslin teething bib.
- Pre-washed: aden + anais says the bibs are pre-washed.
- Not stated in the listing: Green Sprouts, Little Unicorn, KeaBabies, Simple Joys, Neat Solutions, Foaincore, Comfy Cubs, Itzy Ritzy, Hudson Baby, Konssy, CIVARUA, Yoofoss.
Wash soon after use to keep drool and milk from setting, and replace any bib that is torn or has a damaged snap. These instructions come from the listings we read on 17 October 2026 and can change.
Newborn, drool and teething: which bib when?
Newborns need small, soft bibs for spit-up, drool-phase babies need a bandana or fleece-backed style that keeps the chest dry, and teething babies need a bib that isn’t mistaken for a toy. A bib is clothing, not a teether.
For the first months, soft muslin, jersey or bamboo-rayon bibs with adjustable snaps are the usual choice, and the snap bibs from aden + anais and Bamboo Little can serve as burp cloths too. When drooling starts, a bandana style with a fleece or water-resistant back keeps the chest dry. For teething, AAP says that rubber and plastic toys can safely soothe aching gums, warns against liquid-filled teething toys and against anything frozen solid, and warns that teething necklaces, including silicone ones, pose serious choking and strangulation risks. A bib isn’t a teether, and a bib with an attached teether is a separate product we haven’t reviewed against that advice.
Safety with cloth bibs
Supervise feeding, take bibs off before sleep, and retire any bib with a loose snap or torn fabric. Chemical rules also apply: CPSC names bibs as child care articles that must meet limits and be third-party tested.
- Supervise: AAP advises supervising mealtimes for infants and young children.
- Not for sleep: AAP's safe-sleep page says to keep loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers and other soft items out of the sleep space. It doesn’t name bibs, so take the bib off before sleep as the same rule would suggest. A snap-on bib or burp cloth is a loose soft item.
- Lead and phthalates: accessible components of children's products must not contain more than 100 ppm total lead (CPSC), and bibs are listed as child care articles under the 0.1% limit on restricted phthalates (CPSC). Both require third-party testing and certification. We haven’t seen test reports for any listing.
How many cloth bibs do you need?
Count by laundry rhythm: the bibs you use in a day, multiplied by the days between washes, plus spares.
Cloth bibs get wet and dirty faster than silicone, because they absorb. A drooling, teething baby can change several a day. If you wash every second day, a pack of eight to ten is a common size; if you wash weekly, you may want two or three times that. This is a rule of thumb, not a tested number. Large packs on this page include Nvatorfox's 12, Yoofoss's and Gerber's 10, and eight-packs from KeaBabies, Konssy, Gerber, CIVARUA and Comfy Cubs.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best fabric for baby bibs?
It depends on the use. Muslin is light and makers describe it as quick to dry, terry is looped like a towel, fleece-backed bandana bibs keep the chest dry, and bamboo-rayon is soft and stretchy. We haven’t measured absorbency.
Is muslin or terry more absorbent?
Makers describe both as absorbent, and layered muslin lists three to eight layers. We haven’t measured, so we can’t say one beats the other.
Are organic cotton bibs safer?
The labels are the makers' statements, and we haven’t checked any against a certifier. Cotton and organic claims don’t replace the supervision and closure checks that matter for safety.
Is a bamboo baby bib really bamboo?
The listings say rayon or viscose made from bamboo, which is a manufactured fiber that starts from bamboo. It isn’t raw bamboo cloth.
Can a baby wear a cloth bib to sleep?
No. AAP advises keeping loose soft items out of the sleep space. Its page doesn’t name bibs, so take the bib off before sleep.
Can I use a cloth bib as a teether?
No. AAP says rubber and plastic toys can safely soothe gums and warns against teething necklaces. A bib isn’t designed to be chewed.
How often should I wash cloth bibs?
After use, because drool and milk set in. Check the listing, since Nuby's muslin bib is hand wash cold only.
Why are there no prices on this page?
Prices go stale and Amazon restricts reusing review data. The Amazon page shows the current price and stock.
