What is a drool bib?
A cloth bib made to soak up saliva at the chin and neck. Most are bandana-shaped triangles with a cotton or muslin front and a fleece or water-resistant back, fastened with snaps.
It is for drooling, not for mealtimes.
Bandana, rectangle or carrier: which shape?
Bandana bibs are the classic. Rectangles cover more of the chest; carrier-style bibs are made to wear under straps.

Safety, in plain words
A bib is clothing: it doesn't lower the risk of choking. Stay close, check the fastenings and take it off before sleep.
- Stay close and sit upright. Health Canada's guidance says children should be supervised and sitting upright while they eat, not lying down, walking, running or distracted. It doesn't mention bibs.
- Check the fastening. Look at snaps, ties and straps at every meal and stop using a bib with a loose, cracked or broken part. Neither source says more about bibs than that, so this is common sense, not a rule we can cite.
- Take it off before sleep. Health Canada says a crib should be completely empty except for the mattress and fitted sheet, and that a baby shouldn't be left in a crib with a necklace, elastic band, scarf or soother on a long cord. It doesn't name bibs; we follow the same rule.
- A bib isn't a teether. Don't let a bib be chewed or worn as a loop around the neck.
- Words on listings are claims. "BPA-free", "food-grade", "organic" and "waterproof" are the maker's statements; we haven't seen test reports or certificates.

When do babies start drooling?
Many start around 2 to 3 months, and it often increases around teething. Every baby is different.
Do drool bibs prevent rashes?
A dry chin helps, but a bib doesn't treat a rash. If skin is sore, speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
Is a bandana bib better than a rectangle?
It's a matter of preference. Bandana bibs sit neatly; rectangles cover more.
How many drool bibs do I need?
Plenty: you may change them several times a day. Many families keep ten or so.
Can a drool bib be a teether?
No. A bib isn't a teether.
Can my baby sleep in a bib?
