First rule: follow the listing and label
The care instructions come from the maker and they vary by product. Read the label or the listing before the first wash and follow it, because the wrong wash can wear out a waterproof layer.
In our verified listings, instructions run from dishwasher-safe to hand wash only, and many listings don’t state care at all. Several waterproof smock listings (ElecMotive, HaimoBurg) say frequent machine washing may affect the waterproof layer and recommend hand washing; Maiwa, POIKSHARK and PandaEar's long-sleeve bibs say hand wash only. The table below counts the instructions we found.
| Care instruction in the listing | Listings | Brands |
|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher-safe | 2 | Lalo, Simka Rose |
| Machine wash (as stated) | 42 | BIBaDO, BabyBjörn, Bamboo Little, BapronBaby, Bearmoss, Benoxine, Burt's Bees Baby, COOROBIN, Copper Pearl and others |
| Hand wash recommended | 2 | ElecMotive, HaimoBurg |
| Hand wash only | 6 | Maiwa, Mepase, Nuby, OXO Tot, POIKSHARK, PandaEar |
| Disposable | 8 | AiQiaoXin, Eli with Love, Floraltop, KIIS, PARASOL, Shinymoon |
| Not stated in the listing | 26 | Bella Tunno, Bumkins, CIVARUA KIDS, Comfy Cubs, Foaincore, Green Sprouts, Hudson Baby, Itzy Ritzy, KeaBabies and others |
We counted each listing once, by the main instruction, and "not stated" means the listing didn’t say. These instructions come from listings read on 17 October 2026 and can change.
Fabric and waterproof bibs: what Bumkins says
Bumkins says its waterproof fabric bibs are machine washable: rinse off food first, skip bleach, fasten the hook-and-loop closure, flip the pocket inside out, and hang dry or tumble dry on low.
The most detailed manufacturer guidance we read comes from Bumkins' product care page, which lists bibs under its waterproof fabric section. It says: machine washable; rinse off food residue first; don’t use bleach or non-chlorine bleach additives; hang drying is best and tumble dry on low is acceptable; before washing, flip the pocket inside out and fasten the hook-and-loop neck closure; rinse stains promptly in cold water and wash as soon as possible; and make sure the bib is fully dry before storing it. This is one maker's advice for its own products. Other makers differ, and the listing is the authority for your bib.
Silicone bibs: washing, odors and stains
Bumkins says its silicone items are top-rack dishwasher safe or can be hand washed with unscented grease-fighting dish soap and warm water, then air dried. For odors it suggests boiling, citrus and a vinegar and baking soda paste; for stains, sun.
Bumkins' care page covers silicone items in general; it doesn’t name bibs in that section, so confirm with your bib's label. It says: dishwasher safe, top rack only; or hand wash with a gentle unscented grease-fighting dish soap and warm water and air dry; use unscented soaps and detergents and gel rather than powder or pods, because scented or powder products can leave a soapy aftertaste; avoid abrasive sponges and cleaners. For odors, boil the item for 30 minutes, or rub it with cut lemon or lime and then apply a vinegar and baking soda paste overnight. For stains, wash as directed and then "naturally bleach" them in the sun for a few hours.
Where a silicone listing in our research gave care instructions, they ranged from top-rack dishwasher safe (Lalo, Simka Rose, PandaEar) to machine washable (Eascrozn, Cuddle Campus), hand wash only (Mepase), and soap and air-dry (mushie). Silicone bibs aren’t immune to odor and stain; Bumkins gives treatment for both. Rinse after meals, because food left in a pocket is the usual source of odor.
| Care instruction in the listing | Listings | Brands |
|---|---|---|
| Dishwasher-safe | 2 | Lalo, Simka Rose |
| Machine wash (as stated) | 7 | Cuddle Campus, Eascrozn, Loulou Lollipop, PandaEar, YINGJEE, mushie |
| Hand wash only | 1 | Mepase |
| Not stated in the listing | 4 | Bella Tunno, Bumkins, KeaBabies, Nuby |
Cloth, muslin and bandana bibs
Most cloth bibs in our listings say machine wash, a few say cold, and several don’t state care. Wash soon after use, rinse promptly, and replace a bib whose snaps or fabric are damaged.
Listings that state care include Parker Baby Co. and Copper Pearl (machine wash cold), PurComfy (machine wash cold, tumble dry low), Burt's Bees Baby, Gerber, KYTE BABY and Bamboo Little (machine wash), and Nuby's muslin teething bib (hand wash cold only). aden + anais says its bibs are pre-washed. Several popular sets, including Green Sprouts, Little Unicorn and KeaBabies, didn’t state care in the listing.
| Care instruction in the listing | Listings | Brands |
|---|---|---|
| Machine wash (as stated) | 22 | BabyBjörn, Bamboo Little, Burt's Bees Baby, COOROBIN, Copper Pearl, DOSMINE, Dr. Brown's, Gerber, KYTE BABY and others |
| Hand wash only | 1 | Nuby |
| Not stated in the listing | 18 | CIVARUA KIDS, Comfy Cubs, Foaincore, Green Sprouts, Hudson Baby, Itzy Ritzy, KeaBabies, Konssy, Little Unicorn and others |
Bumkins' advice to rinse stains promptly in cold water is written for its waterproof fabric bibs, but rinsing soon after a mess is a sensible habit for any bib. That is our reasoning and not a tested method. Fleece or plush backs are polyester; check the label for the right cycle and dryer setting.
What we could not confirm
We could not read general stain-removal guidance from a laundry authority, so we don’t give stain-by-stain instructions for fabric bibs. We report what manufacturers say and mark our own advice.
We looked for a neutral laundry source, the American Cleaning Institute's stain guide, and could not read it: its website blocked our automated reader and showed a bot check, which we didn’t try to bypass. A search summary of that page mentions enzyme pre-treatment and soaking, but we haven’t read the page, so we don’t repeat it as guidance. If your bib's label gives stain instructions, follow them. For stubborn stains on fabric bibs, a stain remover you trust and the label's temperature guidance are the usual route.
We also haven’t tested any method, and the odor and stain methods above are the manufacturer's, not ours.
Drying, storing and when to replace
Dry bibs fully before storing, since damp fabric invites musty smells. Replace any bib with a loose snap, torn fabric, peeling coating or a persistent odor you can’t fix.
Bumkins says to dry its bibs fully before storing and to tumble dry on low in humid climates. Our advice is to check closures and fabric every wash. A bib whose waterproof layer cracks or peels should be retired; CPSC warned in 2007 about worn vinyl bibs with cracked or peeling surfaces (CPSC release 07-175). Don't wash bibs with sharp-edged items that could tear them. See the bib safety guide.
Which bibs are easiest to keep clean?
Bibs that can go in the dishwasher or washing machine on a simple cycle are easiest, and wipe-clean smocks that you can rinse between meals fit busy days. Hand-wash-only bibs take the most effort.
If laundry time is short, look at the care table: dishwasher-safe silicone and machine-washable cloth bibs are lowest effort. If you choose a waterproof smock, note whether the listing recommends hand washing. You may also want more bibs if yours need hand washing and air drying; see how many bibs you need and the silicone versus cloth comparison.
Handy extras that go with it
A few things parents often pick up alongside bibs. These are searches, so you can compare options yourself.
- Stain remover Treat stains soon after the meal.
- Wet bag Keeps a damp bib away from the rest of the bag.
Frequently asked questions
Can baby bibs go in the washing machine?
Many can. Check the listing: some fabric bibs are machine washable, while several waterproof smocks recommend or require hand washing.
Can silicone bibs go in the dishwasher?
Bumkins says its silicone items are dishwasher safe, top rack only. Other makers differ, so check your bib's label or listing.
How do I get the smell out of a silicone bib?
Bumkins suggests boiling the item for 30 minutes, or rubbing it with cut lemon or lime then applying a vinegar and baking soda paste overnight. Check your bib's label first.
Should I use bleach on baby bibs?
Bumkins says not to use bleach or non-chlorine bleach additives on its waterproof fabric bibs. Follow your bib's own label.
