First rule: the label
Care instructions come from the maker and they vary even within one type of bib.
Some silicone bibs say dishwasher-safe, some machine washable and some hand wash only. Some waterproof fabric bibs say machine wash and others say wipe clean. If the listing and the label disagree, follow the label.
Silicone bibs
Rinse the pocket straight after the meal.
- Food left in the pocket is the usual cause of smells and staining.
- Wash with warm water and a little mild soap, or follow the listing.
- Only use the dishwasher or washing machine if the listing says you can.
Cloth, muslin and bandana bibs
Rinse early, wash soon and dry completely.
- Rinse out food and dribble before the bib dries on.
- Wash at the temperature on the label.
- Dry fully before folding away: a damp pile smells fast.
- Stains from carrot and tomato are easiest to lift when treated early.
Waterproof and coated bibs
Several makers say washing can wear down the waterproof layer.
Where the listing says wipe clean or hand wash, believe it. Hot washes and tumble drying are the usual culprits, so use a gentler setting if the label allows it.
When to replace a bib
Retire a bib that is no longer safe or no longer works.
Look for loose snaps, frayed ties, stretched fastenings and cracked or peeling coating. Our bib safety page explains what to check at every meal.
What we couldn't confirm
We haven't tested any bib's washing, so we repeat what each listing says.
Treat these tips as common sense and the label as the final word.
Handy extras that go with it
A few things parents often pick up alongside bibs. These are searches, so you can compare options yourself.
- Stain remover Treat stains soon after the meal.
- Wet bag Keeps a damp bib away from the rest of the bag.
