The formula
Bibs needed = bibs used per day × days between washes, plus two spares.
If you use four bibs a day and wash every two days, that is eight, plus two spares: ten. If you wash every day, it drops to six. A wipe-clean silicone bib that you rinse after each meal can be counted as one bib for the whole day, which is why it changes the sum.
By stage
These are our rough numbers, not a tested figure. Every baby is different.
- Newborn: none at first. If dribble or spit-up soaks clothes, two to four soft cloth bibs a day.
- Dribbling and teething months: four to eight absorbent bibs a day, because they get wet fast.
- Starting solids: two or three mealtime bibs (silicone or sleeved) plus a few cloth ones for between meals.
- Toddler: two or three, and fewer as meals get tidier.
What changes the number
Four things move the total up or down.
- How often you wash. Daily washers need far fewer.
- Wipe-clean or cloth. Rinse-and-reuse bibs need fewer than cloth.
- Nursery or day care. Some send bibs home each day; ask what they expect.
- Travel and days out. A few spares in the bag save a lot of grief.
A simple starter set
If you want a shopping list, start small and add what you find yourself reaching for.
- Five or six soft cloth bibs for dribble and spit-up.
- Two or three silicone or sleeved bibs for when solids start.
- One or two spares in the bag.
Add more only when you notice you are running out before wash day.
Handy extras that go with it
A few things parents often pick up alongside bibs. These are searches, so you can compare options yourself.
- Wet bag Keeps a damp bib away from the rest of the bag.
- Burp cloths A spare cloth for the shoulder.
Frequently asked questions
How many bibs for a newborn?
Often none to start. If dribble or spit-up is soaking clothes, two to four cloth bibs a day is a common starting point.
How many bibs do I need if I wash every day?
Around six is plenty for most families.
Do I need more if my baby is teething?
Often yes. Teething babies dribble more, so you may change bibs several times a day.
Are silicone bibs counted differently?
Yes. You can rinse one between meals, so one or two cover a day.
Is this a tested figure?
No. It is our rule of thumb, based on how often bibs get wet and how often you wash.
