What is a long-sleeve bib or feeding smock?
A bib with arms: a waterproof or water-resistant cover-up that protects the whole front of your baby's clothes and sleeves.
It is popular once babies start grabbing the spoon, the bowl and everything in it. Sleeves help most when your baby reaches into the food, which is exactly what happens with finger foods.
Most are made from a coated or wipe-clean fabric such as polyester, and many have a crumb-catching pocket at the bottom. Some are sold as a bib and sleeve set, others as one piece that fastens at the back.
Sizing, fastening and cuffs
Listings give an age range rather than measurements, so check how the neck and the sleeves adjust.
- Neck and back: a tie, hook-and-loop strip or snaps. Look it over at each meal and stop using it if the fastening is loose or frayed.
- Cuffs: elastic cuffs keep sleeves up and stop food running down the arm. Some adjust for length.
- Pocket: a deep pocket catches the crumbs that run down the front.
- Warmth: a coated smock isn't breathable, so on a warm day a lighter option or short sleeves can be more comfortable.

Washing and care
Care instructions vary, and several makers say washing can wear down the waterproof layer, so read the listing before the first wash.
Some smocks are machine washable, some say wipe clean or hand wash. Where the listing doesn't say, check the label when it arrives.
- Machine washable: Tiny Twinkle, Mushie, PewinGo, Little Dimsum
- Hand wash or wipe clean: PandaEar
- Not stated on the listing: Haimoburg, Hafftnun, BIBaDO
These instructions are what each listing said when we checked and can change.
Safety, in plain words
A bib is clothing: it doesn't lower the risk of choking. Stay close, check the fastenings and take it off before sleep.
- Stay with your baby. The NHS first foods page says to always stay with your baby while they eat in case they choke, and that they should sit upright in a securely harnessed seat. The page does not say a bib changes the risk.
- Know gagging from choking. NHS Start for Life calls gagging a normal, noisy reflex and choking quiet, and gives first-aid steps. It doesn't mention bibs.
- Check the fastening. Look at snaps, ties and straps at every meal and stop using a bib with a loose, cracked or broken part. Neither source says more about bibs than that, so this is common sense, not a rule we can cite.
- Take it off before sleep. The Lullaby Trust says babies need just two items in their cot: a firm, flat, waterproof mattress and lightweight bedding, and lists soft items to avoid. It doesn't name bibs; we follow the same rule.
- A bib isn't a teether. Don't let a bib be chewed or worn as a loop around the neck.
- Words on listings are claims. "BPA-free", "food-grade", "organic" and "waterproof" are the maker's statements; we haven't seen test reports or certificates.
Frequently asked questions
What is a feeding smock?
A long-sleeve bib that covers the arms as well as the chest. It suits babies and toddlers who feed themselves.
When should I switch to a long-sleeve bib?
Many families switch when their baby starts reaching into the food, usually when finger foods begin.
Can long-sleeve bibs go in the washing machine?
Some can and some can't. Read the care line on the listing you buy from, because washing can wear down a waterproof layer.
Are long-sleeve bibs too hot?
Coated fabrics don't breathe, so on a hot day you may prefer a lighter bib or a short-sleeved one.
How do I know the size is right?
Go by the age range on the listing, then check that the neck adjusts and the sleeves aren't too long.
What about the pocket?
A pocket catches crumbs. Look at how deep it is in the photos.
Is a smock safe for sleep?
No. Take bibs and smocks off before sleep. The Lullaby Trust says a cot should hold just a firm mattress and light bedding; it doesn't mention bibs, so we follow the same rule.
Why are there no prices here?
Prices change all the time. The Amazon page shows today's price for your country.
